Liquid emulsion as easy as 1-2-3

An important part of having good detail in your screen printing is having a good smooth coat of emulsion. For the new DIY screen printer this may seem like a daunting task (it did to me). You can read about our first experience in these two earlier posts.

I learn best when I watch a task several times and see how different people approach the task. So with that in mind, I have included three videos that show how to apply liquid emulsion from You Tube. I thought each had an interesting aspect to share and together give a pretty good look at how it is done.

This video from DickBlick.com shows just how easy it is to mix and use liquid emulsion. For the small screen they were using a squeegee to spread the emulsion and didn’t use a scoop coater. You can also see that they did not advise applying the emulsion in a special photo dark room. It is a good idea to turn off your lamps and overhead lamps to expose the screens to as little light as possible. We have been doing this in our kitchen with regular daylight and had good results.

This video by CatspitProductions included more detail, including how to degrease and prep your screen. He applied emulsion to several screens and I found it helpful to see the different speeds and the angle he held the screen while coating it. I have to say I liked that he didn’t edit out the parts that didn’t go as smoothly as he may have wanted to show. As a new screen printer I think that helped me see what things could go wrong.

This video from Atlas Screen Supplies was very short but provided a nice closeup of using the scoop coater and very simple text and audio instructions.

I hope you have found these videos interesting. Please make sure to let the producers know if you enjoyed these videos.
