Today was a very fun, creative day!
I was inspired to make a gift set for a family who is soon expecting their first baby. I decided to hand sketch my image this time. I am exploring different styles that work well as a screen print image.
After sketching my “cute as a bug” image I scanned it into my computer.
I used the eye dropper in Gimp to make sure that I selected the darkest black for the outline and also added some contrast. I did several test runs to get the size just right for the very small onesie. Next, I printed the images on my transperancies. I cut the images apart so that I could get maximum use of my 220 screen.
I marked with tape on the onesie where I wanted to place the images. Al helped me make a platen from cardboard that fit the shirt and kept the material taut. For the hats I just decided to tape them down to print them.
This is the first shirt that I have printed and I was very nervous about the placement. Using my tape guidelines, I lined the image up as close as possible. The font had a very fine detail but the image came out very well. I flash dried the ink with a hairdryer and moved on to add the butterfly just below the font. My hand drawn bugs were not as fine detail as my font. I was dissappointed that the butterfly and other bugs looked much heavier than the font. I love how the bugs look on the hats.
I decided to add some color detail by using a very fine brush and different colored inks. I like the effect that it produced and I think with some practice that I will really like this design.
There is a photo book and an invitation with the same theme in the works tomorrow.
